Derek Boyko (theboyks) makes a jump from the forums to the front page in this Masques Block draft. Can he survive in a land where time has stopped for both the cards and the current board state?

Nice debut, Derek! Look forward to more from you and the rest and DraftMagic. :)

At least you won that one game where your opponent never played a spell
Kyren Negotiations: “This card is ok.”
/facepalm
Nice way to make your debut I guess lol…
Boy, I wish people passed me Brimstone, Brimstone, Giestflame, and stuff like that pack three. Seems like a fun pack. Good job, and welcome to the world of spectated drafting. I’ll be watching and commenting.
Hi, the second word of my name is pronounced with a silent “d.” If you’re doing it right it should be pronounced the same was as the word “gin.” Just giving you a heads up since your now a professional! Congrats to you, by the way.
Kyle B:
I will admit that I might be underestimating that card. I mean it looks great in a set with a bunch of board stalls, so it might be worth considering. Not having played with the card makes me weary of first picking it, however.
Jake:
Well I did do that. The deck I drafted was still good in my mind, it just didn’t have an out to a bunch of large fliers.
It will be fun to watch you videos!
btw, who is the copywriter for the little video descriptions? They always make me laugh :)
thoughts on excise now? and i thought the snipers that ping every turn were good, ive never actually played the format, but whenever i watch its a bunch of 1/1′s staring at each other for 10 turns
Kyren Negotiations is by far and away the best Red card in the set, and one that people were happy to windmill slam back in the day. The typical to reaction to having that card hit the table is “wow, I’m actually drawing dead to that.” You clearly have a fairly good understanding of the format in general, since you nailed it when you slammed that Troubled Healer with absolute glee (how that card ever gets passed it beyond me, it’s not even possible to beat), but Kyren Negotiations is easily a first pick. The only cards that you would typically take over it are the stronger Rebel/Mercenary tutor cards, since drafting either archetype is clearly the nuts. I mean, card advantage in Masques?!?!? Still, I can tell you with complete conviction that Kyren Negotiations should have been the obvious bombtastic first pick that everyone dreams of. Nothing about that card is “ok” in the format. It’s the stone nuts.
@Kyle B
I totally understand Boyks passing it, since I did the same thing the first time I saw it. If you’ve never played with it or seen it in action before you won’t always accurately be able to judge how strong it is. The first time I saw it I was red/green and passed it w/o much of a though, and then it tabled back to me and I grabbed 11th pick, thinking it *might* be ok. Then I drew it in a board stall and realized that I now just won instantly. I think there is a tendency to KN it since it doesn’t affect the board
You did an excellent job on your debut. Not only are you knowledgeable and interesting to watch but your actually kind and your at least audibly willing to treat your opponent with respect. I was shocked, but in a good way.
Anyway I would have taken Kyren Negotiations too, but it’s really not that obvious so I completely understand why you didn’t. I enjoyed watching this and I can’t wait for your next one. Sorry you lost first game, but that wasn’t for lack of doing the best you could possibly have done.
DUDE! It’s pronounced [jin] O.M.G. After the 3rd time, comment and exit.
>Getting mad about a pronunciation 30 seconds into the first video.
I seriously hope you guys don’t do this.
Haters gonna hate Boyks, I liked the video.
Packhacker:
I came into this draft expecting excise to be about as good as rebuke as I’ve had it played against me effectively as such in the past. After this draft, I’d compare it more to corpse lunge. It is also extremely bad against decks like my opponents which just durdle. I’d probably pass on it in the future.
