Marlon Egolf (merl2pearl) rocks you like a hurricane in his first ever Gatecrash draft.
Dude this card is so good.
oh – beh – DYE – unce, huh?
Dimir seems really strong to me currently, which could be that is is a bit under-drafted. Wight and Lazav are both super strong in Dimir, especially since Lazav works also on creatures you mill, which is quite strong last time I checked :) Unfortunately you don’t have much mill and are more of the unblockable cipher deck :)
I guess you got convinced by the strength of Wight in games 2 and 3 :)
So my record so far with Dimir is 2-1, 3-0, 3-0. The 2-1 deck was kinda crazy, but I got mana screwed out of a 3-0. Shit happens. The 3-0:s were with quite average decks, which leads me to believe the guild is quite strong. A lot stronger than I initially thought.
Anyways, an Egolf draft is always a candy bar so cheers! Hope you like this set more than you did RtR so we get a couple more of these.
The timing of the always inevitable “Do you want to change the color scheme?” couldn’t have been better.
Does anyone else think Dimir is getting a little too popular now?
Just a guess, but I think the end of the last video was your opponent reading skull crack for the first time.
Great draft as usual Marlon, wtg!
I think I like mortus strider more than most people, especially in a deck like this. It is good against the giant green creatures, and decent against aggressive decks since it trades with a few early drops from boros or gruul and blocks any bigger threat.
The real value however is in the synergies with cards such as corpse blockade i.e. block your 5/5 with mortus strider, block your 2/2 with corpse blockade, sac mortus strider to return it to hand, kill the 2/2 and take 0 damage which makes it really hard to attack for your opponent.
It works well with extort, especially with a sac outlet such a corpse blockade, which makes it an infinate drain life for 1 for 4 mana (or drain for 2 for 5 mana if you have 2 extort triggers and enough colored mana).
Usually you won’t have a sac outlet, but in lategame you can easily get in a situation where people can’t block it because if they do it just dies and you get to use extort again which potentially make it both a solid blocker and a semi evasive attacking creature.
Keep up the good work. )
Blind Obedience IS good. A 2 mana, can’t block turn it comes in extort is good. The 1 drop extort is good and it’s basically worse than blind obedience because it never gets in, like ever.
Extort is good in any form!! AHHHH!!
@Espenheim I like Strider too, but I’ve never had or seen a deck where it’s been useful. Reusing extort triggers again is nice but expesive, I like it mostly for SageDenizen, ShadowDenizen, SlateStreetRuffian
@Sean I would imagine that another 2-mana ready to go hard to kill extort trigger would be good in the extort deck, and the whole not blocking part would be better in white-aggression. The two together is just a little weird though, and probably wasn’t good in the deck Marlon was playing.
The only real wrong pick I saw was something that was not Cloudfin Raptor over the second Cloudfin Raptor, because there were several points where you had to trade a ciphered creature because it lacked evasion. Furthermore, the keymaster rogues seem *much* better when returning a creature can re-trigger the raptor’s evolution.
That said, amazing draft, and thanks for moving Wight of Precinct Six several picks up in my order.
Marlon, you’re awesome and a great drafter. Put up some more videos, we all love them.
Good to see you posting again Mr. Egolf!
you and soulbush ARE draftmagic.com!! You 2 should start a podcast or somthing.. w/e more content!!
Thank you so much! Love your drafts. Very entertaining and good drafting.
Let’s just hope you don’t hate this set as much as RTR and put out some more videos!
Nice draft!
“We drafted wrong but we won the draft which is better than losing the draft”
lol, epic words… and another epic modified art, “Egolf, Draftmagic mastermind”
Great job, I think you drafted a fine deck, and your plays were strong. The Wights were definitely all-stars, they’re a beating with the right mill.
(Late comment – catching up on videos)
During the draft portion, I was amused that you had to decide whether to play the Wight or the white!
