Actual Set (175/175… ignoring basic land because who cares?)

Like you said Averyoft, we are looking at this set from two entirely different perspectives. And you bring up very good points. But just one big thing I noticed with what you said.
I happen to think Darksteel Relic is one of the more incredible cards in this set. It’s junk on it’s own, sure, but between synergy with metalcraft and (most of all) Tezzeret, this has the potential to be a great card. Tezz can turn this into a 5/5 indestructible artifact creature. And it will cost no mana. And with the popularity of Tezzeret in standard I think that this is going to be a x2-x4 auto include in Tezzeret decks. Free indestructible 5/5′s are worth running in most competitive formats.
Theres alot in here that is quite intriguing. Darksteel relic could be amazing in the right deck. Yet, Id be hesitant about it, yes it adds to metalcraft, yes tezz can make him cool, but alot of things fall into those categories, so do you want a card that does nothing else? I dont know the answer to that question yet. This set does definatley make me wish I still had the cards I used to and could play legacy. a couple stars in this set, but for me, its mostly just sad. prerelease could be super fun for this though, but after that Ill return to being dissapointed.
Jason,
It seems to me that you’re toning down your arguments a lot, in an attempt to seem more reasonable. You started by decrying how bad New Phyrexia is, and I challenged that, and you dodged the challenge with “Like you said Averyoft, we are looking at this set from two entirely different perspectives.” I don’t remember saying any such thing.
Now I don’t mean to be rude or confrontational, but I’m trying to get to the bottom of why you think this set is so horrible and why you want to tell everyone else that it is.
As for Darksteel Relic, we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on that one. Without tezzeret out, the card does absolutely nothing. Sure, it’s pretty good with Tezzeret, but the benefit (indestructability) is far outweighed by the downsides (card disadvantage, uselessness w/o Tezzeret, lack of any affect on board upon casting). And it’s only useful in the one deck, a deck which is basically tier two, and which isn’t particularly looking for a cheap way to make its 5/5s indestructable. Why would Tezz control give a damn if it’s 5/5s are indestructable? So they can block titans more easily? if the opponent is attacking with titans, you’re either dead or about to finish the titan off in Tezz, you’re not looking to prolong chump blocks forever. The abilities still work out, you know. And making it indestructable doesn’t help a 5/5 out against a hawk, either. So yeah, very little importance there.
Waffle Ninja,
Disappointed in NPH, or in all the recent mtg sets? If the former, what was so good about the other sets?
Porcelain Legionnaire is my favorite from the set so far. He just seems like such a beating. Especially when you drop him on turn 2! Wabam!
Despise by far my favorite card in the set. Should help hopefully take Caw Blade off the top as best deck and open more new decks (hopefully).
Hopefully BEAST WITHIN will make green the next blue in standard.
Mental misstep will by far be the biggest thing in new phyrexia. it will change legacy soo much by punishing combo players and eliminating goblins from the meta-game. this will also make the agro wild nacatl decks have a hard time.
overall an amazing card that will totally warp the meta game of multiple formats.
I really hate what they have done with the color pie in this set. Why is green doing -1/-1 to a creature? Why is blue causing loss of life? I like most of the cards, and think this is easily the strongest of the three blocks that came from the return to Mirrodin. However, on the whole, I feel this set is not as good as Zendikar, which was not as good as Alara. Mileage may vary, of course.
BEAST WITHIN is so amazing… I can’t believe it… 3 Mana for a card that destroy everything it want to be destroyed… and it’s an “instant” too… wow.. wow.. wow.. and even not a rare card (so it’s hopefully not so expansive to get).
I like that set… and dislike it the same.. for instance, it seems that “white” are lame in NPH while the other colors got really cool cards!
The “Phyrexian Obliterator” is a little unbalanced IMO… well… at least it seems so at first sight. IMO this crit is just too hard.
I don’t think Mental Misstep will drastically change Legacy, people will just learn to play around it. It would certainly be different if it were a real blue card, but here, every deck can basically run 4. Even Goblins could do that : t1 Lackey or Vial, if countered, you counter Misstep back if you can. And it cannot counter Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond, just Dark Ritual : a good combo player will Duress the opponent’s hand by any means before starting the combo, and, if the Duress is countered, he’ll know for sure that there are some counterspells left in that hand. I think it basically restores a kind of balance in Legacy, by giving every deck the possibility to battle Combo : by now, if you play Goblins, or any aggro deck, you have to be faster than combo – if it is even possible ! – and the opponent’s hands are left totally free by your deck. Mental Misstep adresses that issue.
Honestly I love the new Mirrodin but the old one was a little bit better. And out of all the sets in this new block, I liked Scars the most (mostly because I run Platinum Emperion and Memnites in my deck) and Mirrodin Besieged only really had Tezzeret Agent of Bolas (which I also use).
By the way, I tried as hard as I could to make my deck scary with a combination of proliferation, arcbounds, affinity, and indestructible. (Mycosynth Golem is AMAZING…along with Darksteel Forge >_>)
I like the NPH set. It’s very different but in a good way. Instead of paying mana costs you can lose 2 life for some cards to activate pretty sick abilities. It’s not like life matters much when even blue cards have infect. Karns special ability is unbelievable. The only thing I’m upset about is the lack of vampires. I think my favorite card is Myr Superion because it only costs two and with a few llanowar elves in your deck and a few Myr Superion you can do some pretty lethal damage. I look foward to buying this set.
‘Phyrexian Unlife’ + ‘Immolating Souleater’ win turn three anyone? guessing that beats tezzeret….=P
Hmm… Fresh Meat seems like more of a black card to me… Like, if it should be Rat tokens or something along those lines. It just seems… A bit too dark for green. Iunno, just a thought.
@ Clover – you are not right, this is very green – remember Caller of the Claw…
@Tim – that doesnt work retard. You cant pay life you dont have. When you get to 0 life you can pump souleater no further, resulting in a 11/1 souleater and a very dead you.
Mental Misstep and Surgical Extraction are my 2 favorite cards. Surgical Ectraction is just intense! Counter a Jace and then pay 2 life ang get rid of all of them… But the problem is that they are $10 each…? Wow…
